Breasts that are too large for your body can affect your normal activities and even cause extreme pain. Heavy breasts are more prone to sagging and can deprive you of your desired appearance. Breast reduction reduces the size of the breasts and shapes them to achieve a more attractive aesthetic.
Who can have breast reduction surgery?
Larger breasts tend to be heavier and this can lead to poor posture, causing upper and lower back pain. Bra straps can also cause pain in the shoulders.
Women with larger breasts may feel that their breasts are out of proportion to the rest of their body. Poor breast balance can affect the type of clothing you can wear and how you see your body. Breasts that are too large can draw attention to your bust line.
Limited clothing options and unwanted attention for women with full breasts may cause emotional problems. Many women are frustrated that their breasts prevent them from participating in physical activities they enjoy and from exercising to improve their health.
Benefits of breast reduction
Breast reduction surgery permanently removes excess breast tissue and fat. Lighter breasts give you a more comfortable range of motion and allow you to participate more in your favourite physical activities and exercise routines. Being able to be more active has health and emotional benefits and may lead to an overall fitter appearance.
During your breast reduction surgery, your breast tissue is reshaped to create a new and improved breast shape. Contouring your breasts can help create a more balanced breast appearance.
Women with larger breasts often experience some degree of ptosis (sagging). You may experience ptosis if some of your breast tissue is below the inframammary line or if your nipples start to droop. During your breast reduction surgery, weak and sagging tissue will be lifted and strengthened. This procedure will help your breasts regain their firmness and provide a more vibrant aesthetic.
The emotional burden of having breasts that are too large can affect how you feel about your body. Women whose breasts attract unwanted attention may feel dissatisfied with their appearance. Not being able to find comfortable clothes or skipping fun activities because of your breast size can affect your overall self-confidence. The aim of breast reduction surgery is to help you feel happy and comfortable so that you can live a life that you enjoy.
What happens during breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery takes approximately two hours. The most common method of breast reduction is to make an inverted “T” or anchor-shaped incision. This incision runs from the nipple under the breast and along the natural curve of the breast. The surgeon will then remove excess fatty tissue and begin the process of repositioning the nipple and areola. These are carefully trimmed to maintain symmetry and parity, preserve breast sensation and create a pleasing result. When all the procedures have been completed, the incisions are closed with stitches and the breasts are wrapped tightly in gauze.
