A beautiful face is a balanced face with eyes, nose, lips, cheeks and chin in proportion to each other. In patients with disproportion between different parts of the face, a malar implant can be used to increase structural integrity and create a more balanced and attractive face.
Cheek and chin augmentation is the most common facial implant procedure. A chin implant can improve the appearance of the chin, while cheek implants can add volume to flat cheeks. Malar implants are made from biocompatible materials and are available in different shapes and sizes to achieve the desired results.
Good health is a prerequisite for the procedure. Smoking inhibits the body’s ability to heal wounds and causes increased scarring. If you smoke, your surgeon may ask you to stop smoking before the procedure.
Malar implant procedures
Implant surgery is performed under general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation. For a chin implant, an incision is made either under the chin or in the mouth under the lower lip. For a cheek implant, an incision is usually made in the mouth through the upper lip. In combination with other facial procedures, the incision may be made through the lower eyelid or through the hairline. The surgical scar is therefore either invisible or barely noticeable. A suitable implant is then inserted through the incision into the chin or cheek. The implant is held in place either by creating a well-fitting pocket or by attaching it to the surrounding bone or soft tissue. Finally, the incision is closed with absorbable stitches, which are removed 1-2 weeks after surgery.
Things to consider after malar implant surgery
After the operation, painkillers and antibiotics will be prescribed to reduce pain and the risk of infection. There may be local swelling, discolouration, numbness or discomfort in the operated area. Some facial movements may also be temporarily restricted during the healing period. The final results of the operation and the real improvement in appearance can only be seen 3-4 months after the operation. This final improvement in appearance is permanent. - Abnormal pain or swelling
- Abnormal discharge from the incision
- High fever
